Did the Pope Stray from Catholic Teaching?

If Pope Benedict's speech had included the Official Catechism of the Roman Catholic Church, he may NOT have been in trouble with the Muslim world. Here is the official Roman Catholic teaching on the religion of Islam:

841: The Church's relationship with the Muslims. "The plan of salvation also includes those who acknowledge the Creator, in the first place amongst whom are the Muslims; these profess to hold the faith of Abraham, and together with us they adore the One, Merciful God, mankind's judge on the last day."

You might want to take a look at Language Log has to say about the Pope's words.

berlyn, the link is broke, can you post again? Thanks!

Very interesting point. But if one just goes down a couple of articles, one also finds this, in Article 844:

844. In their religious behavior, however, men also display the limits and errors that disfigure the image of God in them: "Very often, deceived by the Evil One, men have become vain in their reasonings, and have exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and served the creature rather than the Creator. Or else, living and dying in this world without God, they are exposed to ultimate despair."

844 would apply equally to anyone, christian or muslim. My point with 841 was simply this - if Benedict would have, at anytime (likely at the begining) stated the 'this is the teaching of my religion', he may not have encountered so much anger for quoting Byzantine Emperors from 800 years ago.

Bad PR. Bad speechwriting.

Does a bear shit in the woods?

Sorry couldn't resist.

:)

To answer the title's headline:

No.

So suzanne is admitting that Catholic doctorine is to feel superior too and hate other religions, especially islam?

Interesting.
